Cool Stuff #3

Since we learned about China today, I thought I'd post a picture of me with my family on the Great Wall.

Now, for the videos...

I had to post a clip of a Beijing Opera performance. When I went to China, my dad and I wanted to see the Beijing Opera while we were there. Sadly, my mom hates opera, so we went to see the Chinese Acrobats instead. Maybe one day I will get the chance to see it live, but until then, enjoy what appears to be a wedding scene.

I absolutely love Coldplay, so I had to post this video. This is a recording of the Twelve Girl's Band playing "Clocks" on traditional Chinese instruments.

This is a children's gamelan in Bali. They actually won The Bali Festival of Arts in 2005 for this performance. I find it interesting how the audience reacts to the music and the movements that they do while they are playing.

  1. The picture of you and your family at the Great Wall is pretty awesome. When did you go to China? I would love to travel there.
It does suck that you weren't able to see the Beijing opera, but I'm sure the acrobatics were super cool!

Also, the video of the Coldplay cover was neat! Coldplay has some good songs - "Clocks" is one of my favorites!

  2. I love the picture of your family on the Great Wall! I was not a big fan of the opera, but it was very entertaining to watch! I put this exact video of the Twelve Girls Band on my blog! Yay! The gamelan just fascinates me, especially the children playing it!

  3. It's wonderful that you have had a chance to travel to China. Even though you didn't get to see the opera, I'm sure the acrobats were amazing.
I love watching Chinese opera, their costumes are so colorful and their voices are fun to listen to although I would be afraid to try to sing like them.
I love listening to coldplay too so it was really neat to see how the 12 girls made it sound.
If I were transplanted into that gamelon I would be angry that the audience wouldn't be quiet. But that's all about their culture and how they react to concerts. Realy interesting to watch the children they are so in sync.

  4. I loved everything you posted! I was so enthralled by the Chinese Opera we watched in class, I can't imagine what it's like live. Also, I am a huge Coldplay fan so it was great to see the 12 Girls Band doing a very, very good versions of "Clocks".

  6. I love the 12 Girl's Band cover of Clocks! When we saw the Chinese Opera, I went on youtube and ended up watching Bian Lian- King of Masks and a movie trying to find how they change them so quickly.

  7. Some good stuff, Lauren. Isn't it fun to find songs you love reinterpreted by other cultures? Makes you listen a bit more closely to the original, I think.
